I went up to check on Mom.  I think she is better now.  Of course we cannot stay long, so I quickly asked the nurse the important questions.

Mom's ICP (inner cranial pressure) is 14.  This is great because normal is between 8 and 15.  Her fever was up to 99 earlier so they have placed an ice pack on her chest.  This will help to cool the blood going to her brain and help keep the ICP down.

The nurse seemed more attentive and even talked to me about taking care of Mom just the way she would want her parents to be taken care of.  (During this speech I wondered if she had read my earlier post on the blog.)  I made sure she had both of our cell phone numbers and reminded her that Heidi would be the main contact for her today because she will be here sometimes today when I am not.

For now, we don't need a new nurse.  I haven't said anything to the staff yet either.  Heidi and I will continue to check on the nurse and if we see problems - even little things, we might talk with the charge nurse this evening and make sure the nurse today gets a new assignment for tomorrow....

  1. Sounds like you did the right thing by staying close and like Aunt Cheryl said if you are there the staff knows it and hopefully will be on the top of their game. Maybe the Nurse was having a bad morning or needed a cup of coffee. Hang in there you are doing a great job. Take some time to enjoy your babies they grow up so fast.

  2. The pressure readings sound good to me. I am glad you feel more comfortable with the nurse. You two girls hang in there. You are remarkable young women and I am so proud of the mature way you are handling things. Debbie will be so proud of you for all you are doing. I agree with Aunt Rita about enjoying your kids. Give them hugs from me.
    Love you,
    AUnt Cheryl

  3. Sounds like the nurse had a change of heart and realized her short answers had a negative effect on you and Heidi (and your Mom). Go with your gut feeling. Obviously, your family has your Mom's best interest at heart more than any staff member at the hospital. Let me know WHEN you would like for me to take any shifts. I will be happy to.
Prayers continue to go up to our Great Physician.

  4. Amy -
I worked for your Dad at Vecta many years ago. He is a very special guy and always "glowed" when speaking of one of the three of his girls. I received a prayer request from the Methodist Church in Midlothian which is where I heard about your Mom's illness. Please let your Dad know that our thoughts and prayers are with the four of you. I also live in Midlothian so if there is ANYTHING I can do - please let me know.

  5. Well I'm glad the nurse was better today! I would have been upset if she wasn't! I'm so happy to hear your mom's pressure has gone down. Praying that it remains that way. I'll be out of town this weekend but next week let me know if you need childcare!

    Love you all,

  8. Dear ones, I hope this is an appropriate place to send our love, prayers and thoughts as we have not been able to visit you all in person. Please know that our hearts are aching for your ordeal and we have not ceased to lift Debbie and all of you up to our precious Lord with tears and beseeching. We are praising Him for the good report this morning. We serve a mighty God who is able to do anything we ask or think or imagine. But not only that, He is good and kind and compassionate. The Word says in Psalms 56:8 that He keeps a record of our tears. Please be blessed to accept this offer of prayer for Debbie, taken from Psalm 5.
O, Precious and Holy One, Give ear to our words, consider our sighing. Listen to our cries for help, our King and our God, for to You we pray for Debbie’ quick and complete recovery. Morning by morning, O Lord, you have heard the voice of those who love her. Morning by morning our requests are laid before You and we wait in expectation for Your mercy. Let us always take refuge in You as You bring us back to a place of grateful joy. Spread Your protection over Debbie - bring complete healing to her body. And as we, Your children, continue to trust in Your mercy and grace, we shall rejoice in You for Your faithful love. Bless and surround Debbie and her family and friends with Your favor as with a shield. We ask these things in our dear Lord Jesus name, Amen. Gary and Vivian Olson
